Rivet nuts (blind rivet nuts) are common for thin-sheet single-sided joining, but wrong selection or poor installation causes loose joints, spinning nuts, panel distortion or thread damage. This article covers selection and installation.
Carbon steel (10B21/35K) is strong and low-cost, zinc-plated for general sheet metal. Stainless 304/316 serves corrosion or cleanliness needs. Aluminum rivet nuts lighten aluminum panels but are weaker. Match material to panel to avoid galvanic corrosion; insulate aluminum-to-stainless contacts.
Flat flange heads have large bearing surfaces and are most common; countersunk heads sit flush; reduced-flange heads suit thin sheets and edge distance. Body profiles: smooth for soft panels, vertical-grip or hex for better anti-rotation—use hex on hard panels or high-torque joints. Blind types seal the backside for watertight enclosures.
Grip range must match panel thickness: the nut body can only bulge so far. Outside grip range, the nut won't set or breaks. Confirm panel thickness first, then select from the manufacturer chart.
Drill the specified hole—e.g. about Φ9.0mm for a flat-head M6. Off-center or oversize holes cause misalignment. Tools: manual hand riveters for repair/small batches; pneumatic or hydraulic tools for production—faster and more consistent pull.
First, insert the nut through the hole from one side. Second, thread the tool mandrel into the nut 3-4 turns and keep perpendicular. Third, pull the trigger: the tool draws the mandrel and bulges the body on the blind side, clamping the panel. Fourth, release and reverse the mandrel out. Verify the nut doesn't spin or pull out and that thread gauges pass.
Common issues: spinning nut = oversize hole or weak grip; low pull-out = wrong grip range or insufficient pull; panel bulge = over-pull. Adjust stroke and pull force on trial sets.
The clinching nut range provides selection charts and tooling advice.
