Self-clinching nuts provide permanent, load-bearing threaded attachments in thin sheet metal by displacing panel material around a specially designed head. During installation, an arbor press or pneumatic squeezer applies axial force, driving the nut's annular knurl into the panel while the displaced material cold-flows into the undercut beneath the head. This mechanical interlock delivers exceptional push-out and torque-out resistance without welding or tapping.

Panel Compatibility and Selection Criteria

Sheet thickness and hardness are the primary constraints. Standard carbon-steel self-clinching nuts perform reliably in 0.8 mm to 3.0 mm cold-rolled steel (SPCC), galvanized steel (SECC), and aluminum (AL1060/5052), with panel hardness limited to approximately HRB 70 or HB 120. For harder substrates such as SUS304 stainless steel, dedicated stainless-steel clinch nuts with enlarged mounting holes are required.

Thread size must be paired with the correct pilot hole. Common metric sizes range from M2 through M12; typical hole diameters include Φ4.2 mm for M3, Φ5.4 mm for M4, and Φ6.4 mm for M5. An oversized hole compromises retention, while an undersized hole risks panel cracking or nut distortion.

Material, Finish and Installation Process

Material and finish options include SCM435 or 10B21 carbon steel with case hardening (surface hardness ≥ HV380) and zinc plating (clear or yellow chromate), as well as SUS304/SUS410 stainless variants for corrosive environments. Installation force typically ranges from 8 to 15 kN depending on thread size, and first-article validation should include push-out and torque-out testing to confirm clinching reliability.
