Press‑Nut Base Hole Tolerance Guide, Avoid Press‑Fit Failures By Sheet‑metal Opening Size

Press nuts are pressed into pre‑fabricated sheet‑metal holes to form permanent thread joints for thin panels. Common on‑site failures such as nut spinning, loosening, surface bulging and sheet cracking are mostly caused by improper base‑hole dimension and tolerance instead of nut quality itself.

Too‑small base hole: When opening size is below recommended value, insertion resistance rises sharply. It results in sheet bulging or cracking. Knurled teeth cannot fully sink into sheet metal, leading to insufficient torque‑out and pull‑out strength, and nut spinning risk in service.

Too‑large base hole: Insufficient engagement between knurled teeth and sheet. The nut can rotate under minor force, pull‑out strength drops significantly, and detachment easily occurs under vibration, which is a frequent mass‑production defect for press‑fit process.

Material‑based hole adjustment: Follow nominal hole size for cold‑rolled steel sheet. Take upper tolerance limit for harder stainless‑steel panels. For soft aluminum alloy sheets, adopt middle‑lower tolerance to avoid over‑expansion of hole by knurled teeth.

Practical notes: Remove burrs on hole edge after laser cutting or turret punching. Burr accumulation changes actual effective hole size and triggers press‑fit defects. Keep hole perpendicularity; tilted holes will cause skew insertion and degrade torque performance.

Project suggestion: Prepare test panels with multiple hole sizes for pull‑out and torque‑out test during sampling to confirm proper dimension. Inspect base‑hole dimension in mass production and include hole tolerance into sheet‑metal inspection checklist to prevent press‑fit failures.
