Press‑in nuts lock by mechanical interlock between sheet metal and outer knurls. Improper selection or process parameters will cause nut rotation, pull‑out, sheet bulging or cracking. Design and process engineers should focus on sheet thickness, mounting hole dimension, press force and base material.
Each press‑in nut has its valid sheet‑thickness range and shall not be applied on overly thin plates. Standard through‑hole press‑in nuts normally suit 0.8‑2.5 mm steel sheets. Sealed blind‑hole press‑in studs demand higher minimum thickness. Too‑thin plates cannot provide sufficient interlock and lead to rotation or detachment. Always refer to datasheet thickness limits in design phase.
Hole dimension heavily influences performance. Too‑small hole brings excessive press‑in resistance and causes bulging or cracking. Too‑large hole reduces knurl engagement and weakens torque‑out / pull‑out resistance. Follow datasheet hole size strictly. Remove burrs from laser‑cut or punched holes before pressing.
Insufficient force: nut head does not sit flush; weak interlock brings rotation risk. Excessive force: severe sheet bulging or cracks. Carbon‑steel sheets need higher press force than aluminum sheets. Always run trial samples before mass production. Ram must keep vertical; tilted pressing causes part deflection and failure.
1. Nut spins freely: oversized hole, insufficient sheet thickness or low press force. Correct hole size, use matching sheet and increase press force moderately.
2. Nut pulled out easily: insufficient knurl engagement or hard base material. Choose high‑knurl variants for hard stainless‑steel sheets.
3. Sheet bulging: over‑pressure or undersized hole. Reduce press force and correct hole dimension.
4. Sheet cracking at pressing position: brittle material or too‑high pressure. Switch to more ductile sheet metal and lower pressing speed.
Besides standard press‑fit requirements, perform sampling air‑tightness test after installation. Any sheet crack will break sealing and defeat waterproof performance.
