Self-clinching nuts and studs are pressed into pre-punched sheet metal holes, locking into plate by annular groove. Many on-site failures including fastener pull-out, sheet cracking and bulging surface are not product defects, but caused by improper sheet selection, wrong hole dimension and uncontrolled pressing pressure. This guide summarizes key technical points for clinch fastener selection and installation.

1. Basic Selection Checklist

  • Confirm sheet material and thickness: cold rolled steel, aluminum or stainless steel. Fastener must match sheet, minimum plate thickness shall not be less than specification;
  • Classify product type: standard clinch nut, blind clinch nut, self-locking clinch nut, SO/SOS/BSO clinch stud. Self-locking type is preferred for vibration environment;
  • Confirm thread size and pre-punched hole diameter, pilot hole is critical for clinching quality;
  • Select material for corrosive environment: zinc plated carbon steel; 304 stainless steel for humid or outdoor applications.

2. Pre-hole & Pressing Process Notes

Pilot hole must be machined strictly according to standard. Oversized hole leads to insufficient engagement and poor pull-out strength. Undersized hole brings excessive resistance and cracks thin sheet. Hydraulic clinching machine is recommended. Keep pressing head perpendicular to sheet with uniform pressure, finish pressing in one stroke. Repeated impact pressing is forbidden. After pressing, fastener head shall be flush with sheet surface.

3. Typical Failure-Mode Root-Cause

Fastener pull-out: Over-sized pilot hole; insufficient sheet thickness; inadequate pressing pressure, annular groove not fully embedded into sheet.

Sheet cracking: Too thin sheet; excessive pressing pressure; burr remaining on hole edge.

Thread stripping: Defective thread on clinch fastener or over-torque during assembly with weak thin sheet support.

Loosening under vibration: Standard clinch nut used in continuous vibration environment without self-locking structure.

4. BOM Ordering Recommendation

Do not simply write “M3 clinch nut” in BOM. State product type, thread size, matching sheet thickness, material and self-locking requirement. Mark ROHS compliance for export orders.
